Cycling safety educator gives tips for bikers in Helena

Education for cyclists and motorists alike helps foster a culture of respect for cycling, professional biker educator and advocate Mighk (pronounced “Mike”) Wilson emphasized at his presentation at Carroll College Wednesday evening.

Several groups, including Helena Bicycle Club and Safe Ride to School, sponsored Wilson’s trip to Helena, which included a group bike ride around town, upon which he gave tips and tricks for biker safety. Bike and Pedestrian Coordinator for Metroplan Orlando in Florida since 1993, Wilson has traveled across the country teaching communities how to promote biking. He said he’s been a transportation cyclist since he was 10 years old delivering papers in Ohio.

Wilson has helped develop programs teaching safety, including Cycle Savvy, a course that teaches bikers how to earn respect of motorists by practicing dependable, confident driving.

    There were a couple TV interviews as well. I don’t have the links to them, but Mighk does.

    What a lovely town! Helena is a great place to ride. I could get totally spoiled by a grid like that. Not to mention a high of 82 with 20% humidity in August 😉

    I was there for about 10 days, right after Christmas. I don’t know what the humidity was, but the high for most days did not crack 0F (-18C).
