A City Manager Sez:

‘You are not allowed to do it unless this commission approves it’

The City Manager of the City of South Miami decides that a group ride is an “event” and needs a permit.
“It’s a special event no matter how you cloak it in my determination. We were notified in writing an event was taking place. That requires the city to form some type of security and not compromise the safety of citizens, no matter what it is called. It requires us to integrate police in this whether we are invited or not, and that costs money.”

A bunch of people driving their vehicles on the same route at the same time is an “event” that needs special permission from the city manager?

I guess the drivers of all those cars backed up on the highway every morning and afternoon need to contact the city about getting a permit for their daily “event”.

The united police state of america we now live in will require a permit before you do anything. Please bend over and prepare for inspection.

Perhaps the City Manager should walk into Scully’s Tavern and tell the leather-clad patrons they’re not allowed to ride their “bikes” together without a permit from him.

Don’t worry! The League of American Bicyclists will be right on top of this one. Their crack attorneys will parachute into the city from a low flying C130, waiting until the very last second to open their chutes, file restraining orders, and demand public accountability. Why, I can hear the engines droning now…or…is that really crickets?
