A little Dutch cycling for you. 🙂

Thanks to Carol Monaco for sending the video to remind me of a century we did in the everglades that looked a lot like this.

Yeah, I remember watching your bike pitch to the left as you rode out of an area protected by trees. But it wasn’t nearly as bad as the brevet we did along the intercoastal a few years back — wind gusts of 30+ mph coming off the water on a north-south route. We got whipped coming and going. Good times!!!

We had some nasty head winds in the Tour de Cure 3 weeks ago. They weren’t that strong, (only 10-15 mph and steady) but they were out the SW and the last 45 miles were from the NE. Nothing like in this video. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right?

I’m confused. I thought the Dutch lived in a utopia of comfortable upright bikes and proper grade-separated cycling infrastruture. Dream: shattered.

I have a cycling friend that is fond of saying “The wind is my friend, it makes me stronger”. Said friend is 6’5″, he’s an awesome windbreak and has done a 40K TT in around 50 minues. Having cut my cycling teeth in south florida along the intracoastal/coast we flatlanders got used to dealing with winds. I hated cross winds the most. Many a cycling guru from the north would come down in the winter to show us how it was done thinking they’d be stronger because of all the hill climbing they do. They’d all say words to the effect “Oh my god! all that spinning!!!” They couldn’t hang.

The best ride though was the saturday morning ride from Lake Worth to the Palm Beach inlet and back with the winds coming out of the NE at around 40mph. I don’t think the group got up much over 22mph on the way up (these were very strong racer types, speeds often hit 30 mph). On the way back it was like putting out the sail – we hit 40mph on the way home. It was FUN!! I’m too chicken for those days of riding now, just a fun memory now!
