Going to Bike Cop School

policebikes

I have an exciting opportunity this week. I’ll be sitting in on a Law Enforcement Bicycle Association training class at OPD. I’m looking forward to learning more about how law enforcement officers use bikes to do their work. I hope I’ll learn a few bike handling skills I never thought of before, too.

I’ll report when I can.

Way to go, 60% of the on IPMBA bike training is based on Traffic Cycling and the obstacle riding (going up, down stairs, quick dismounting, rear wheel slide, curb hopping, …) should be fun, kinda like urban mountain biking.

I hope they’ll be breathing hard and heavy to keep up with you… hopefully they’ll also learn from you too. Will they teach you how to use a radar gun? That would lead to some great reporting. Survival course?Good luck Keri.

Radar gun? Probably not in the curriculum, or part of the usual radar gun certification to be zapping a bike.

Anecdote: my first wife and I were on our tandem recumbent (back-to-back) heading south. Cop in bushes, probably bored, pops us with gun from a reasonable distance. I checked my speedo and read 18 mph (calibrated pretty closely) and he shouted 21 mph as we passed.

Cadence of 100 rpm at the time equates to 3 mph over ground and the pedals were the most forward and most reflective (non-rounded) surface, so I figure the pedals plus the bike means an inaccurate radar figure.

With my 140mm cranks I can rip out nearly 200 rpm, so any radar reading will really be inaccurate, especially downhill.

I’m looking forward to hearing of Keri’s experience. With her talents, it’s probably going to benefit the community in all directions.

Be sure to bring the card for your camera tomorrow 🙂 and take pictures of the new Specialized mountain bike you bought tonight. It’s suwheet, everyone.

Have fun with the OPD. Try not to show them up too much.

It’s amazing how a comment can be so easily twisted,,, the radar gun is for reading car speeds, not bike speeds. Who said anything about “zapping a bike”? Oh well… as Keri has written “cyclists sure are intolerant people”.
