Enforcement Officer of the Year: Pete Kelting, Seminole County Sheriff’s Office. Award presented by FBA’s Law Enforcement Program director, George Martin.

Lt. Pete Kelting of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office is a friend of cyclists. As a former Seminole County bike patrol officer, he understands cyclists’ safety concerns. Facing a challenge from several groups of pack riders in March 2008, Lt. Kelting sat down with bicycle community leaders and sought common ground. With a desire to correct the problems of motorist hostility and unsafe passing, Lt. Kelting is serving on FBA’s Civility Coalition (a citizens’ strategy group sponsored by the Winter Park Health Foundation). He also serves as an adviser for the development of FBA’s Bicycle Law Enforcement Tool Kit. While many departments shrug and say “there’s nothing we can do,” Lt. Kelting has stated to cyclists and the news media that his department takes abuse of cyclists seriously and will follow up on reports. A cooperative relationship between cyclists and law enforcement are essential to making Florida roads safer and more welcoming for human-powered vehicle drivers. Many thanks go to Lt. Pete Kelting for his leadership in strengthening this relationship.

I met Lt. Kelting at a Traffic Justice Coalition meeting two years ago. Mighk, Hal and I had the pleasure of working with him to try and sort out a pack riding kerfuffle in the spring of 2008. He’s been a tremendous asset to our Civility Coalition as well as the law enforcement education program. He understands the issues we face and the best practices we use to keep ourselves safe. And he works on his end to make the traffic environment safer for us.

Congratulations to Lt. Kelting for a well-deserved award!

As an advocate for cyclists, his voice is unmatched. Congratulations, Lt. Kelting on a well-deserved honor.

Hey, that is great. A cop who gets it is a big deal in my books. Obviously this dude does, but I’m not sure being a cycle officer always does the trick…

Congratulations Lt. Kelting! I had no idea that you had received this award. Keep up the good work as in the state of Florida, bikes are always on the road and drivers need to be aware of them.
