For those of you who don’t have enough cycling blogs to follow, I’m back up and running at Bicycling is Better, which can be found at

I was going to leave a comment on your “Don’t Wait: Start Biking Now” article from 2007, but I don’t want to have to register with yet another site just to leave a comment. Could you consider allowing anonymous comments, like here?

My comment was that you started it off with “Maybe not you folks in the snowbelt”, but hey, I’m in the snowbelt, and I cycle for transportation year-round! We can do it too! (Okay, caveats: I’m in Portland Maine, which is not technically in an official meteorological “snow belt” on the level of, say, Buffalo NY, but they have year-round commuters too. Secondly, I do have the option of working from home, which I take on the roughly half dozen days each winter when we’ve got 6″ on the ground and still falling, and my car-driving co-workers are also working from home.)

The unregistered comments idea sounds like a reasonable request. I think I was concerned about spam when I set it up; I’m sure there are ways to deal with that.

As for my “snowbelt” comment: no doubt, plenty of folks are making it work. I was just thinking that STARTING using a bike for transportation in the winter would be a bit more than most folks would want to handle. Better to start in fair weather and work out the kinks before taking on the challenges of winter riding!

I biked through the winters as a teen in NE Ohio (Cleveland suburbs).

What kind of bike is that you’re riding in the picture on your resurrected blog Mighk? When did you get it?

Thanks Mighk. I thought I was the only one in Central Florida to discover the xtracycle (on the internet) but was just waiting to have enough money to buy one and then Kyle at Kyle’s Bike told me otherwise. The pictures at xtracycle’s FLICKR site are pretty neat, especially of mom’s picking their chidren up at school (and one carrying a cello on the bike).

Is the bike still functioning or did you experience any malfunctions?

Lakshmi is doing quite well. She is my regular, almost daily transportation.

The only Xtracycle-specific issue has been some squeaking at the three bolt-on points. Just requires unbolting them, greasing them up, and tightening them back down.
