Yikes! Somebody tried to steal my bike today?!

Cabled up to a pole and went in the store. I always use the same pole when I go to this store. Came out 15 minutes later and it was moved to the other side of the pole and knocked over.

Obviously, this was not a “pro” or they could have clipped the $10 cable. But it does give me pause. What have done wrong? I went out of my way to put together a bike that was so butt ugly that nobody would want it. The most expensive things on that bike are the Schwalbe Big Apple tires at $25 apiece.

I did try to make the bike useful, though. And a few weeks ago I was warned that someone might want it just because it was useful. I said that it would pretty easy to spot someone riding it and that’s true.

I guess I’m just going to have to pony up for a real U lock. I really don’t want one because they are hard to use and it is so convenient just to use a cable. I had a case hardened steel chain for a while years ago. I didn’t like it because it was so darned heavy.

In the mean time, I better write down the serial number and fire up the engraver. Darned.

Yeah Eric, I suspect bike theft is likely to become a problem around here. I’ve always felt pretty comfortable walking away from my bike for a short time. But the worse the economy gets… and the more desirable a bike is for transportation… sadly, we’re probably going to become more like other cities.

The U-lock I have is easy to use, but it is heavy. I just consider it a “training device” … not that I’m training for anything 🙂

Anyway, glad you still have your bike!
