As CommuteOrlando readers know, my beloved Long Haul Trucker was stolen on September 27. I've owned a lot of bikes. And many more expensive than the LHT, but none have fit me so perfectly or felt so right.

Blue Ridge Parkway Reality Check

One of my favorite places to go for a cycling vacation is Asheville, NC. I enjoy a number of routes that include sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway. So naturally, I was alarmed last week when I received several email alerts and calls to action with titles like “Blue Ridge Parkway Under Attack!” and...

We have power to change the street

Decades ago our public road space was usurped by a wealthy minority. Thus began the Motor Age Occupation of our streets. It started with invasion and resistance, but in time, the majority was made to believe that streets were for cars and all others intrude at their own peril. Citizens were made to believe...

Classic Left Cross

Fortunately, the cyclist was not injured. This is very similar to the one time I was hit by a car. It’s also similar to a more violent crash that occurred on Colonial a few months ago. Keep in mind, when you are passing a queue, every gap in the adjacent traffic is an opportunity...

Green line is the new connection (there were no roads through here). Yellow line is new, completed sidewalk. Pink line is proposed sidewalk (survey flags...

1,000 Miles – The Victory Lap

Like most adults, I hadn’t ridden a bike in years. During a vacation to Mackinac Island in 2006, I rented a beach cruiser and took an eight mile ride around the perimeter of this “car free” getaway. After returning home, I researched bikes and selected an Electra Townie 7D. Not an electric bike, the...

Tis the Season, Let’s Ride!

It’s that time of year again! I’m going to use this post to add rides as they are planned or sent to me. Here’s what I have so far: Dec. 2: First Friday – Light Up Orlando! Let’s be festive! Decorate your bike for December’s First Friday ride. Battery-powered Christmas lights can be found at Home...

Bicycling Infrastructure We Can Live Without

November 16, 2011

Oh, dear me! Another city (Indianapolis) tries to accomodate bicyclists by painting some “creatively” designed lanes. http://www.wthr.com/story/16050449/bike-lanes-continue-to-confuse-drivers-riders This could go in the Cycling Infrastructure Hall of Shame. The video is cringe inducing.
