What Happened On the May 2nd Cargo Ride…

(My Belated Report) Oh, where to begin… We left the Cady Way trailhead with 9 cyclists and a dog, 5 trailers, and bikes with assorted baskets and panniers. Keri led the ride, choosing a nice route, and setting an easy pace. If you have watched videos of Keri cycling confidently and competently through the streets of...

Contemptible Stop Signs

This is a map of something being called a “trail extension” between the Cady Way Trail and Colonial Drive. Shows Trail Stop Signs It was constructed last year with a completely clean slate. Property was condemned, the old street was torn up and rerouted, new drainage piping and curbing was installed as well as a new...

stopsigns

Tom Vanderbilt’s article on Stop Signs in Slate yesterday, Stop! Is it possible to design a better stop sign?, raises some good points about our traffic culture. In 1998… there were more than 700,000 crashes at intersections marked—or “controlled,” as engineers say—by stop signs. More than 3,000 of these were fatal. Having nearly...

My first commute (If Darlyn can do it, I can too!)

So I figured, being a bike advocate and all, it was high time I left my car in the garage and crossed the Great Divide between Ocoee and downtown Orlando. Google Maps helped me work out the trickiest part of my route, which was the first mile, guiding me through a subdivision to avoid...

Practicing high speed turns in the Savvy Cycling class

Practicing high speed turns in the Savvy Cycling class In May, three circumstances converged in a perfect storm that convinced me to travel eleven miles on busy streets for National Ride Your Bike to Work Day.  1) I read a book called “Younger Every Year” that stated everyone needs at least an hour of exercise...

Leave it to the off the wall thinkers of Bicycle Utopia , USA to make some noise! Definitely gets the imaginative and creative juices flowing for me.  And to think “I” had a really big flatbed utility trailer! Now this is a Bicycle Trailer

Bike-to-Work (and School) Day Adventures

National Bike-to-Work Day was a grand day of bike buses in Orlando. Bike Bus # 1 — An Early Morning Ride My day began at 4:15 AM. I had prepared the bike and video cameras the day before, so I had some time for a smoothie and coffee before setting out to Cady Way to pick...

May 22, 2010

After publishing a very salutatory article about Bike To Work Day and bicycling in general, the Orlando Sentinel chose to publish Make Our Roads Safer, an editorial condemning Florida bicyclist’s objections to HB 971 which would require bicyclists to use bicycle lanes.  In the Sentinel’s editorial, local bike advocates Brad Kuhn and Mighk Wilson’s...

So much ignorance, where do I begin?

Beneath the yellow tarp lies the body of a 19 year old girl who was following the Oregon's mandatory bike lane law and Portland's bike lane design.

Today’s Sentinel editorial is in support of the mandatory bike lane law. The Sentinel shows a clear lack of understanding of pretty much all the issues of law, safety and road design as it pertains to bicycling. But hey,  don’t let your complete ignorance of a subject get in the way of expressing opinions...
